International conference „mediation moves“ at the European University Viadrina

Under the motto „mediation moves …“, the international mediation conference took place on 6 October 2018 at the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt (Oder). The conference was organised by the Chair for Mediation, Conflict Management and Process Design(Prof. Dr. Ulla Gläßer) in cooperation with the Master’s Program on Mediation of the University of Copenhagen (Prof. Dr. Lin Adrian) and the Singapore International Dispute Resolution Academy (SIDRA) (Prof. Dr. Nadja Alexander).

Around 150 participants (see below) from the USA, Scotland, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Denmark, Poland, Ukraine, Israel, India and Singapore, among others, came together to discuss intensively where and how mediation is currently moving to and developing – and what causes and moves people to use mediation. In this respect, the approach of the conference was also to be understood as a counter-movement to the findings of the evaluation report on the German Mediation Act.

The following topics in particular were discussed at plenary panels and in workshops:

  • the effects of the increasing (legal) regulation of mediation,
  • the consequences of digitisation and platform economy for the formats of (online) dispute resolution,
  • the requirements of the „New Work“ movement for the design of conflict management (systems), and
  • personal development processes sparked by mediation training and their (political) effects.

In addition, concrete projects were presented that exemplify how mediation moves into society in the areas of school, community and public planning.

Last but not least, two workshops under the heading „mediators move“ dealt with how principles from improvisation and martial arts can be made usable for mediators and how the inclusion of outdoor experience can positively influence conflict dynamics.

In view of the extremely positive response to the concept and the themes of the conference, a follow-up event („mediation moves on …“) is already being planned, which is expected to take place in India in February 2020.
